Kiln and Firing Process

Where heat meets artistry, our kiln ignites innovation, Crafting masterpieces with precision and dedication.

Kiln and Firing Process

At Heroiclay, our kiln and firing process is based around medieval Japanese wood firing kilns fired over 40 hours continuously with oak.  The kiln has to be monitored continuously as when working with natural materials some pieces burn quicker than others.  The dedication required to complete the firing process is a labour of love.  We do use state of the art technology in the form of thermocouples and pyrometers and pyrometric cones to help us ascertain the temperature in any part of the kiln.  This helps to ensure optimal results.  We use premium materials such as fine stoneware’s and porcelain to create the work and a combination of different building techniques to manufacture the work.  We strive for perfection in every detail yet the kiln gods often intervene to produce effects we were not expecting.  Sometimes this is good, sometimes not.  We look at every piece that comes from the kiln and decide whether or not it is good enough to keep or will be designated to the scrap pile thus ensuring everything you see meets our strict expectations of what makes a good piece and with this commitment to excellence at every turn Heroiclay brings you functional artistry that stands the test of time.
